Man I realized it has been a long time since i updated this blog … Been working shifts so my biological clock is totally all screwed up.. at times i need to wake up @ 5.30 am to report for work and other times i need to goto work only @ 2.30 pm …….

As an employee here @ Grand Canyon, we get lots of free/discounted rides. Recently I went for this tour called the Desert View Sunset tour. Its free for employees but tourist need to pay about 30$. It brings you to various breath taking points outside of the Grand Canyon village, and the watch tower and ending with a spectacular view of the sunset @ Yaki point. Here’s a photo of me overlooking the Canyon. Although its summer time, it still gets really chilly when the wind blows…and its hell of windy out there!

<<Photo of us and the Bus Driver>>

The blue shirt and pants I’m wearing is actually my working uniform. I went for this tour immediately after my work and didnt had time to have a change of clothes. Steven and Kev couldn’t make it for the tour so I went with XY only. The good thing about being an employee is that we get free drinks and sometimes food :)… We went along with this tour bus with 20 tourist. Me and XY were the only 2 employees.. and when we alight @ Desert View there was this small cafe… while all the tourist were queing up to pay…. the both of us just take the food and walked off :)

Just before the start of the tour, everyone on the bus was asked to introduced ourselves and when both me and XY introduced outselves as both Singaporeans and employees, everyone starts cheering…. For some reason they really like us. Whenever we board or alight the bus, people would applause and cheer us on…. hahah thats so embarrassing!

This photo was taking using the panoramic function of my olympus 1030 SW camera and I must say that camera really performs way beyond my expectation. The images it captures are really vivid and I LOVE the panoramic function. The best part is that its water and drop proof! I duno drop how many times already manz …. and its just working perfectly fine.. The only complain I have against it would probably be its retarded user menu.. Kind of hard to navigate @ first and it takes a while to get use to it. ..

This 2 photos are slightly dangerous shots … Cos it was really near the edge of a cliff…. but its also one of my fave shot!! Luckily I never got blown off by the strong wind..

Finally the tour ended with a sunset viewing session…. The funny thing about it is that me and XY were busy taking photos instead of watching the sunset….and by the time realized, the sun has almost set.. Here is probably the only photo of the sunset we got.

I’ve also been shifting to a Cabin near Maswik recently…. Its really convenient there compared to my old room. Theres wifi in my room and the cafe is just a 10 second walk across the road!!

Finally work has started.. I’ve been assigned to the retail department @ El Tovar Gift Shop… My primary job is as a casher….Although i’ve only bee working for like 2 days it felt like years… I’ve experienced all sorts of weird and obscure things happening in the gift shop… Here’s a list of wierd stuff:

  1. If there’s 2 Casher lines open and a pretty gal wanna make payment, she always goes to your colleague’s line.
  2. The fat & ugly ones always comes to you.
  3. The ones with lots of questions always comes to you.
  4. The ones who like to pay in coins always comes to you.
  5. The only time a customer wants to do a refund/exchange, is when theres a queue with 100 people in it.
  6. For every 10 customer who approaches you, 1 will ask where’s the bathroom.
  7. Everytime your colleague steps out of the door for a break, 10 customers will step in
  8. The fatter the americans are, the more stuff they buy
  9. The americans who are snobbish tend to come from the upper middle class(The really rich americans are surprisingly nice and polite)

Here’s a picture of my gift shop:

It has been one week since I’m here… One thing I noticed around here is that one hardly gets hungry…. In fact most of the time I’m feeling too full……. and thats with just 2 meals per day (Most of the time I’ll just take branch).. Theres no lack of food (and beers) around here… and its dirt cheap too!

Last nite I was in the TV room with those americans….. and this guy just pop by with a bottle of raspberry scotch and started passing it around.. those americans all started drinking straight from the bottle… no ice, no mixing with anything else…..I cant remember whats the alcohol content but it at least 40% and it was burning my throat….by the time i took the 3rd sip i can feel the effect going into my head….. Those americans are really drunkards… after the scotch….. Tim went back to his room and take a 12 pack of budweiser and tried to offer me one….Heng I was still sober enough to reject else i think today no need report for work liao …….. Here’s a video of TV room gang during their drinking session… I’m @ the back left position…

As I was saying there’s seriously no lack of food around here and each portion is like twice that in Singapore.. In fact most of the time the portions are so big that we would just order 2 or 3 sets and share between the 4 of us.

In the afternoon the 4 of us (Steve,Kevin,Xiang Yan and Me) were @ the recreation center attending our orientation when it suddenly started snowing. XY had to leave halfway for a job appointment and steve and kevin were stuck in a meeting… So I had to send XY to the busstop… ok…. that’s an easy task….if not for the fact that its SNOWING outside and the nearest busstop is 1.5km away!! In case you cant do the maths, let me do it for you.

1.5km to busttop + 1.5km back to recre center = 3km. Thats a freaking 3KM in the SNOW!!

Visibility was so bad and we were totally not prepared for it. The weather forecast here really suck… All i had with me was a sweater and jeans… No long johns no gloves…! My fingers went so numb that I almost thought they were dropping off and there were like frost bite on my heels…

The best thing is after I walked back to the recreation center, Steve and Kev’s were nowhere to be found. I checked every corner of the recrea center EXCEPT the computer room…and of all place they had to be there!..MURPHY’s LAW damn it!

Wah lao….. freak… my 2nd day in Grand Canyon only already gena 吃豆腐 by people.. Freak man…….
I was sitting @ the TV room talking to this native American Red indian(Cool guy) , when suddenly this freaking big fat gal came through the door… This is the first time i’m seeing her.. and this is the first time she’s seeing me.. but she got so excited and came over and gave me a hug and a peck on my cheek…. then at first i thought she was being friendly…. so i gave her a peck back…oh boy thats when the trouble starts…I’m not sure what signal or vibes i gave her..but she just pop herself beside me, place her elbow beside me and start to lean against me… machiam trying to cuddle like that… Hey I know I’m handsome… I know I’m friendly.. but that doesn’t give u the right to come lean right into me…. Keep ur hands to yourself can, I may be a guy, but you’re like 10x my size… I don’t think i can handle 1 ton of human meat leaning on me.. That peck i gave u was just a hello peck… it means no shit..

The real problem : After a while, one of the resident told me that the gal was actually a guy…..holy shit… gays!! grrrrrrr

Brrrrrrrrrrr I’m freazing cold and I’m at the final stop before reaching GC..

Flag Staff seems to be a pretty small and layback town. Everyone around here is real friendly and easy going. Got here in the early afternoon and by the time I’ve settled the tix for the final bus ride to GC as well as applied for a Social Security number, it was already late afternoon. Most of the shops here closes real early… as in 5pm that kind of early..Walking down the streets of flagstaff @ nite gives a very surreal feeling.. the roads are quiet and dimly lite and the pedestrians are few.. Those few strangers u see on the streets seems to be taking their time strolling down the pavement free of worries and without giving a hoot to the rest of the world..

One thing that strikes me is the number of pubs/bars here…it seems that every street there’s always a pub or two..Its like a mini Clarke Quay on every street..

grr…gena interrupted while blogging…and now the sun is rising… time to shutdown comp and watch some sun rise…..

Finally… after 26 hours of flying and transiting can check into a hotel & have some rest… And I only reached Phoenix.. Its not even GrandCanyon yet.. but Phoenix is HOT! And When I say hot..I’m referring to the temperature…not the gals..

Picture 1.png

see that? 38 degree celsius!! Thats like almost twice as hot as in SG can…..I think I am melting like ice cream la.. Luckily It’s not humid here… So while its warm at least i’m not sweating

And the highlight of the day was when we were walking down Mill Street in Phoenix, there’s this angmo guy who tried to pick XY up… That guy pick up line is freaking dumb.. Because XY was wearing this hotshorts with the words “Maia Beach” on her bottom ..then he approached her saying “Hey I saw ur words Miami Beach on Your ass.. I’m from Miami too!” …. omg.. Try harder can dude…. No wonder they say the average americans are dumb.. and dumb humsap too! Before He left, he shook our hands(guys) but he gave XY a peck on the cheek lol…..take chance only siah…

But the average americans are real friendly too, While that stupid dumb ass was bz trying to pick XY up, another gal who was by the sidestreet overheard the conversation and suddenly just joined in with “Oh U’re from Miami?.. i’m from florida”… and joined in the conversation..

hmmmm why no angmo gal try to pickup me up?! Why no angmo gal stare @ my butt and goes “Ooooo Singapore!!” :(

Had a really long day and its 3.30AM @ phoenix now (6.40pm SG)..Time to catch some sleep.. need to wake up @ 6 to catch a grey hound to Flagstaff..

I did the dumbest thing yesterday: I took my weight…

Argh..71.5KG…. omg..Why on earth did i take my weight… I could have live in delusion that everything is alright….and continue eatting and eatting and growing fat…

Great..now I’m gaining weight and decreasing in height (lost 3 cm..Where did it go? Probably on vocation) ….. No one told me menopause starts so early….

(Actually on a side note, I take my weight regularly at least 3 times a week ..just that last couple of days broke out of the routine and didnt weigh myself)

Thats 1.5 kg I’ve gained…. Do i blame it on my sit-down-the-entire-day-and-wait-for lunchtime job .. or do i blame it on the cookies that I’ve been eating recently (*grin)

Darn..must be the job…..AND the cookies (irresistible)…

So what I did what i normally do… Start hitting the gym and hitting the track field… I had a plan with ying hao… We’ll start hitting the gym during office hours (or after office hours depending) and after the gym, a run… starting from today…

Theres nothing to talk about the gym session… except that we pump real hard…. (its gay going gyming with a guy.. I’ll trade him for a babe anytime..) But after the gym, I was pretty shagged out and I was like whinning to my fren… lets not go running.. i wanna puke… That ass… know what he did? He dragged me all the way to the field by keep psyco-ing me.. “We’ll run real slow…”, “Its been a long time since i run too , dont think i can complete 6 rounds”, “I run v slow too..”, “No pain no gain”….. “<and a whole lot of bullshit>”…

Well… he’s right though… no pain no gain… since when life was easy…. at least never for me.. So yeah… we started on the run…. and pretty soon we were panting like mad dogs .. That ass said he runs v slowly.. bullshit… hes like constantly infront of me…. feel like kicking his ass if not for the fact that i cant catch up… and… at the 5th round… theres this gal…. she just zoomed past us…. hey GAL! ..no over taking! …..pretty embarrassing .. 2 huge guys(1 v handsome.. and the other not so.. guess which am i?) were left to bite the dust while this short small sized gal just sprint …. Now dont ask me if shes pretty.. I was busy trying to catch my breath and staying alive….. HUMILIATION

So now my arms are aching.. my legs are aching…and great.. I now have a bruised ego.. I only need 1 thing now: To lose 1.5kg…

Guess what… This post is crap.. and if your reading till this point… I just wasted 5 mins of ur time…  :P

Went out surfing with a friend yesterday. Shall not name his name for fear of embarrassing him. The sun was great… Fantastic in fact… I’ve got a red lobster skin to prove it. (Ouch) but the Wind was NON EXISTENT. I was standing on the board, holding the sail…and I wasnt even moving. That made me look like an idiot. Even that jelly fish I saw in the water is swimming faster then me….. It was probably laughing at me. (laugh all u want jelly fish, I’ve have the last laugh when u next appear in front of me as a condiment). Since I’ve already rented out the sail, theres no point going back to shore and wait for the wind. So I did what all good surfers will do. I pumped the sail.I pumped it again.And again. I tried chasing after the jelly fish. We had a mini race.. Guess what? He won. Shucks. In the end I pumped all my way out to sea. By the time I got far out, I got pretty tired. I aint going nowhere with no wind. So i just put down my sail and lie down on the board. What was supposed to be a surfing session has now turned into a sun tanning session.

While I was lazying around on my board,my friend was practicing his techniques (He haven’t been surfing for long so this is a really good time to practice when the sea is calm). Then we got drifted away from the main shore. I know I was drifting. But I wasnt worried cause we weren’t that far and besides, we can easily just surf back.

A speed boat came past us and asked us if we wanted a lift back. We declined and just gave the thumbs up. Getting back is not a problem. The main shore isnt that far away.With a good wind, 5 Min or so and we probably can surf back. With no wind, 15 mins or so and we probably can pump our way back. Shouldnt be a problem right? WRONG!

Half an hour, my friend got so tired from practising (and falling into the water. Told you he’s in experience). He told me he wanted to puke. Unoh. That didn’t sound too good. I told him that we better head back then. But he was so tired, that he couldn’t balance himself upright anymore. Even when he balanced upself properly, he was too shag to control the direction properly. And did I mention he wanted to puke? He was too tired to drag and row the board back. Basically He’s stuck out there at sea. Happened to me before. Happened to every surfer before at sometime or another.Nothing to be embarrassed about. Told him to take a rest and hang in there while I surf my board back to the nearest shore. Left my surfboard at shore. From the shore my friend looks like less then 400m away. So I just swam out. 400m suddenly seemed like 500m…then 600m..then eternity. Heck! Even eternity doesnt last this long.. As I swam, lots of questions came into my mind. Stupid Questions. What If i get eatten up by a shark?What if that jelly fish came back to sting me?? What if i got swallowed by Loch Ness (*wink)???… By the time I got to him, I was panting like a dog. Swimming out into the sea is much more tiring then expected. And as you swim you get hit upon by cold currents. While swimming every few mters, suddenly you will experience this coldness in the water. After you swim past the cold area, you’ll get to feel the warm ocean currents again.Pretty refreshing.

When I reached him, I told him to sit on the front of the board while I tried to surf both of us back. That didnt work too well. I couldn’t balance myself properly with him there. But i managed to bring him closer to within swimming distant of the nearest shore and asked him to swim back to shore while I surf his board all the way back to the main shore.

By the time I got to the main shore I was pretty much exhasuted. That swim out into the sea was real exhausting. If anyone is wondering what happened to my board. Well, we just went to where we left it and carry it all the back back to the main shore , the old fashion way: walking.

Not too bad.. managed to finished up the whole post without divulging who my friend is….

Was a pretty fun trip.

And Chris you owe me dinner for not mentioning your name here.

Yes people…. I’m still alive (Sorry to disappoint you guys out there)… Been a long time since i blogged, but you know.. these kind of stuff are seasonal (Just like durians). Sometimes you have it, sometimes you don’t. Now I’m in the mood for blogging so brace yourself for the whole load of profound stuff (I heard someone shouting “more like crap!” at the back of the room… Shuddup)

While surfing some articles on Instant Messaging just now, ICQ suddenly came into my mind. Yeah, you know the one that was real hot eons ago. Being the kaypo(nosy poker for those who have been eatting potatoes their whole life) that i am, I decided to login to webICQ and snoop around to see if theres still anything alive in there. Clicking on that “Launch ICQ”, a popup popup-ed (sounds wierd..) appeared asking me for my ICQ #. Good I still remember it… 7 digits ain’t too hard for a smart (and handsome) guy like me to remember. Next, “please key in your password” ………*speechless*….err…umm.. aye… passs…word? Unoh..(That guy who shouted “Smart Alec” … do me a favour.. I’m trying to think here..Shuddup)

Ah..there you go.. That always work.. *grin

As the ICQ was logging in, wasn’t expecting anyone there….

Behold, my friends…a Miracle…
3 Dinosaurs!

Overwhelmed with excitment from my discovery, I immediately decided to msg them:

“Who are u?”

As I waited for their reply, I’ve already thought up my second question:

“Which Species are you? T-rex? Triceratops? Stegosaurus? Or Barney the purple Dino?”

*Wait*Wait*wait*

Oh my god ..they are slow… faggots.. no wonder they got wiped off the face of the earth!… Evolution is not a very patient lady..Especially if your slow…

After 5 mins or so, I’ve got tired of waiting and decided to just give up.Maybe I’ll login again in a couple of months and see if their fossil are still around..

But I’m curious as to who they are though .. and why havent they move on? Haven’t they heard of MSN? Yahoo Messenger? Skype?

Anyway was doing some research on Instant Messenger and just thought I’ll share some interesting stuff.
Different Instant Messenger are popular in different parts of the world,and below is a short list:

instant-messenger.JPG
(This list is by no means extensive.)

Some Facts about Instant Messengers:

  • 49 percent of the European online population, used IM applications to communicate online.
  • The MSN Messenger application has the strongest penetration worldwide, with 61 percent market share.
  • MSN Messenger is also dominant in Latin America, reaching more than 90 percent of IM users, and in Europe and Asia Pacific, reaching more than 70 percent of IM users in each region.
  • Skype is now used by 14 percent of IM users worldwide, although this application is used by only 3 percent of the online population in North America. Skype appears most popular in Asia Pacific, reaching 26 percent of the region’s IM user population.

Reminisces

I remember a couple of years back (6 -7 ?) When I was in sec sch and college, ICQ used to be all the rage. Everyone would be using it and everyone will be comparing thier ICQ # with each other to see whose is the shortest. IRC was pretty hot then too. Then suddenly MSN came along. Everyone started switching to msn during my army days. I never really experience the transition period, cause I was in army during that time and was hardly ever online. All i knew was that suddenly everyone was on MSN. No one ask “Whats your ICQ #? ” any longer… They switched to “You have MSN?” And now I’ve like a total of 330+ contacts on MSN.

50% of these I’ve no Idea who they are.
Of the remainding, 40% I ‘ve never spoken to before.
Of the remanding, theres like only a handful I chat with on a regular basis.
Sometimes I wonder, out of those 330+ people, how many of them still have me on their contact list…

Till next time…

I’ve been contemplating on getting a pair of boxing gloves recently. After doing some research and searching around, I’ve narrowed down to 2 candidates that are within my budget.

grant.JPG zeal-pro-mt-boxing-glove1_01.jpg

The one in black is the Grant Campeón Bag Gloves. A pretty well known brand made in USA, from the reputable RingSide Store.

The one in white is the Zeal Professional White MT Series Bag Gloves. This is made by a local company Zeal Fight gear.

Both gloves are around the same price @$60, but the Black one requires a shipping fee of 30USD to ship whereas the white one has FREE shipping.Specification wise, the black one is slightly lighter weight, thus offering lesser protection. But this makes it a more rounded glove for both sparing + hitting the punching bags. The white glove though offers more protection at 12 oz, its significantly heavier. Meaning your punches will be slower and it takes more effort. Personally I think the black one is nicer in term of appearance and its a more trustworthy brand. But 30USD for shipping?!!Thats like 3/4 the price of the glove.

Ended up I decided on the Zeal Professional White MT Series, after they ensured me that their gloves come with a 1 month warrenty and it comes from the same factory as the other established brands out there. What they forgot to mention was that the factory is in Pakistan!

Zeal Professional White MT Series:

  • $60
  • 12oz
  • Regular Size
  • HandMade
  • Genuine Leather
  • 1 Mth Warrenty

So far been using it for 1 week. Pretty satisfied. Should have got a 10oz one instead though. It feels a bit bulky.

Recently I’ve been trying do run bittorrent on my ubuntu. By default Ubuntu comes with a no frills BitTorrent client. Its ugly, its unituiative and its been removed off my system. After doing some digging on the net I’ve narrowed down several clients that works great on linux. Below are my findings in order of preference.

KTorrent

This client may seems just a little slightly complicated at first but within a couple of minutes, one could probably get used to it. This slightly complicated interface also means that it has the ability to provide a much greatder deal of infomation on your torrent. A plus point is that it’s pretty light weight and doesnt consume a ton of your system resources. The killer feature is its plugin system which allows function such as up&p, peerguardian/ip banlist, all within KTorrent interface itself.A note of caution: If you are using the ip banlist feature for the first time, be prepared to wait a couple of mins (Read:eternity) for the iplist to finish converting.

An annoyance to some users could be that the system tray feature doesnt work correctly when running it on gnome (But it works great in Xfce and of course KDE.Since i run Xfce most of the time it doesnt matter to me.). At this point of time, the latest version is KTorrent 2.1rc1. If you are running any earlier version prior to this, its highly recommended to upgrade as iI noticed a drastic increase in speed when using the latest version.

kt.png

qBittorrent

This torrent client wins hands down for the best interface. It’s so simple and intuitive that within the first min or so, i got the hang of it. It has a nice search feature built in whereby you can search for torrents file within the client (Through piratebay & mininova etc) In fact this client reminds me of uTorrent. Lightweight and simple. However it does have some missing features though. The most important one is the up&p support for port forwarding. Its non existant. This might post a problem for those who are having trouble opening their ports or might be a hassle if you like to change ur ports often. If you looking for a feature rich client with options like disk caching etc, this is not for you. But if you just want something simple and light weight, do give this a try.

TorrentFlux

In the words of the developers:
TorrentFlux is a FREE PHP based Torrent client that runs on a web server. Manage all of your Torrent downloads through a convenient web interface from anywhere.

In my own words:
It is crap.

For your typical end user, I have absolutely no idea why would anyone want to run this. Sure it has a webinterface, meaning you can connect to it from anywhere in the world. BUT that also opens all sorts of vulnerabilities. Think about it, to run this you need to install:

  • Apache Webserver
  • Php
  • MySQL

That’s 3 major software you need to secure and keep track of the latest vulnerability. Just to download some torrents, the amount of system administration work you need to do just doesnt cut it. The only few reason you might want to use it:

  • You are always on the move and would like to have access to your torrent comp from anywhere.
  • You like the interface. It looks pretty refreshing i must say.
  • You like looking for trouble.
  • You like being hacked.
  • Your a retard.

torrentflux.png

Ending note:
There are quite a few other linux torrent clients out there, these 3 are the ones that i found worth mentioning. Of course, a another really good way is to install wine ( semi windows emulator) and run utorrent on it. You’ll be amazed at how well it works.

More on that what I have the time.

Digg!

Its 5am.

I’m getting tired.

But I’m doing my programing lab

It’s almost done.

ALMOST except for 1 small problem.

There’s a bug.

A tiny one.

I’ve been stucked here for like 2 hours. In fact it’s so minor that I can probably submit it without anyone noticing it.

Even if they noticed it, its not going to fail me.

There’s a saying I’ve heard some where:
“Your future depends on your dreams”
So go to sleep

Heck. Sleep.

[Update] Woo.. solved it. 40 lines. 4 hours. Damn I’m getting rusty. Just for the record, heres the code:

#include “stdio.h”
#include “string.h”
#include <wait.h>
 void main(int argc, char *argv[]){
 int numproc=1;
 int CmdLocation=1;
 int forkResult;
 int counter=0;
 int counter2=0;
 char *CmdPara[20];
   if (argc>1 && strcmp(argv[1],“-n”)==0){ //To find if theres a -n option
 	numproc=atoi(argv[2]); //convert string to integer
	CmdLocation=3; //Store location of cmd parameter }
  printf(“Creating %d child process.n,numproc);
 for(counter2=CmdLocation;counter2!=argc;counter2++){
 	CmdPara[counter2-CmdLocation]=argv[counter2]; //Store the parameters in an aarray
 }
  CmdPara[counter2]=‘’; //Null terminate the array
    for(;counter<numproc;){ //Create numproc of proces
 	forkResult=fork();
 	if(forkResult>0) { 	//parent
 		counter++;
 	}
 	else if(forkResult==0){
 		//child
 		//execute the code and if theres and error spit out the error msg
 		if(execvp(argv[CmdLocation],CmdPara)==-1) perror (“The following error occurred”);
 		exit(0);
}
 }
 int childID,status;
while(numproc!=0){ //While theres still child process.
 childID=wait(&status); //Wait for any child to terminate
 if ((childID!=-1) && WIFEXITED(status)){
 	printf(“Child ID %d is terminatedn,childID);
	numproc–; //Contains remaning # of child we need to wait for
}
}
printf(“All child process terminated. Exiting now..n);

exit(0); //exit parents
}

[Update]: Damn.. The stupid lecturer postponed the date line. I stayed up late for nothing. Screwed up

Digg!

A couple of days back while I was on my way back on the train, there was this group of dudes who were bitching talking among themselves rather loudly. Despite my best efforts to sleep, their voice kept penetrating my head & after a while I gave up. I decided to just sit in and evesdrop (well not really they were pratically making a din) into their conversation . At the beginning their conversation was still semi-intelligent … until someone started complaining. After that it seems that the floodgate just opened and their conversation degraded from semi-intelligent to a total bitching session.

Anyway it sets me off on thinking about why do people complain so much.
According to thefreedictionary.com, the official defination of “complain” is:

com·plain Pronunciation (km-pln)

intr.v. com·plained, com·plain·ing, com·plainsh

1. To express feelings of pain, dissatisfaction, or resentment.

2. To make a formal accusation or bring a formal charge.

So why do people actually complain? Are they unhappy with their life? Are they trying to destress? Are they trying to change the influences the opinions/midset of those around them through their complains? Are they complaining just so that they appear to be the victim? Maybe they felt helpless ? Maybe they are angry and are trying to vent their fustration? Maybe they are bored? There could be so many reasons.

I’ve known some people who are always full of complains. In fact as I am typing this post out, I feel there are quite a few different type of complainers:

There’s the casual complainers (those you often seen in places like the MRT, markets etc) who starts their small talks through complains and keep the conversation going. These kinds usually are harmless. In fact it just helps to keep the conversation interesting and allows people around them a glimpse into their life. Just remember to keep the volume low ya.

Next we have frequent complainer. People complain about every single thing. From the price of today’s fishball, to the latest policy adopted by PAP. Again these are pretty harmless too. Gossipy yes, but harmless. It might get pretty irritating though if your not on the same frequency as them.

Next in line would be those angry complainers, provoked by some event. Their words are full of anger. You sense great displeasure. You sense hatred. You sense danger. These people are often complaining to vent off their fustration. Dont step on thier toes.

Next we have the pretenders. These kind of people complain so as to project a desirable image of themself to others. It could be something as simple as complaining with others just to fit into the crowd, or as far as complaining to cast them as the good guy and the others the bad ones.

There are probably many other types of complainers and often people do not belong to just 1 type. Different circumstances provoke different type of complains too.

Now now, I dont mean to say that complaining is bad. I myself am guilty of complaining. In fact I used to complain a lot more. But it seems that as one grows up, one learn to take things easy. Somethings can be changed , somethings cant(but it might be worth trying) . Sometimes complaining helps, sometimes it doesn’t. In fact I do think that complaining helps to make life easier at times. It dampens the fustration you might be feeling. Makes you able to carry on.

However there are certain complainers that I think are dangerous. I cant think of any term to give them. Maybe the retarded complainers. But these kind of people who gets angry at certain events around them. They feel angry. They complain. But the difference is that they believe that the fault lies in those around them. Or that those around them caused his/her plight. Often they come up with lame excuses and stuff. They often feel jelouse that things are going well for the others but not themselves. Yes they do complain. They think that the faut lies in everyone else but themselves. Sometimes its not their fault neither isit those around them. Sometimes things just happens. I say this kind of people are dangerous because often they hold grudges. The anger last longer.  These often  might affect the relationship with  those around them. And because they often blame anyone and everyone but themselves, they complain lots but do nothing about it.  And nothing gets changed. They think of all sorts of lame excuses. Blame all sorts of things. But generally, i feel that the more excuses/complains one has, the less likely he/she is to attempt to make a change and do something about it.  They are being a danger to themselves.

Generally this is how i think all  complains should be where theres an issue:

  1. 1st Complaining: Sure go ahead complain all you want.
  2. 2nd Complaining: Okay,your complains are boring me. Maybe you should slow down a little
  3. 3rd Complaining: Alright, stop complaining and start doing something about it!
  4. 4th Complaining: Please live with it and shuddup.

I’m just crapping

Just went for an interviwed with Accenture . Was expecting a old grumpy fellow, but it turned out to be a pretty young guy who still managed to throw in a joke or 2. It was held at Sintel Building at Serangoon (wah lao eh damn far), damn ulu ulu near the industrial area. Thought near industria area, must be machiam a warehouse/plant environment whereby people were quite casual and stuff, filled with all sorts of engineers + warehouse uncles. But turns out to be a very posh building with all offices. It would have fited in nicely in the CBD area. It fact it looked kind of out of place surrounded by warehouses and workshops. Not like what i had thought.

The interview was pretty smooth and the interviewer was pretty young probably late 20+ (was kind of expecting someone older & he’s from ME working in an IT firm lol) . Was provided with a brief idea on what kind of project we’ll be working on:

In year 2000, Singtel was moving their platform from their biz mainframe to a more robust one built on JAVA. Accenture was called in to develop this new platform. by 2004 They had completed the project and roughly around this time, Singtel bought over Optus telecoms in Australia. Accenture was then again called in agian this time to code their biz software architecture. So what they have been doing is to take the program they had done for Singtel and tuned it for Optus.

The part whereby I’m comming in (if i am successful) would be part whereby they are doing regression testing & deployment for Optus -Mobile. The main bulk of the programming has already been done (Its java they are using). It sounds pretty interesting to me but i was warned that the work load is quite heavy & working OT is a norm.

I’ve been thinking about the Pros and Cons if I’m offered this post.

 Cons

  • Its at Serangoon => 1h15min journey
  • its not a 9-5 job.. More like 9-8 or 9-10 job
  •  No life
  • I’m not really familiar with java so i probably have to catchup a bit. Shouldnt be too difficult though
  • Its formal wear.

Pro

  • There will really be opportunities for learning.
  • I’ll get to work with many enterprise grade software like Oracle & J2EE. Something which one wont be able to do  if it was a small company
  • It’ll look really good on the resume.
  • Did i forget to mention that they are paying real good $  for an Intership. Roughly 30% higher then what banks are paying their interns. This means I can do my VIP + not worry about finding a job for the hols.

Anyway I’ve applied for several other companies too including SUN + IBM .  Will update again when theres any news.

Since day one , the coach has always been stressing the importance of throwing a proper punch. When you punch with one hand, the other hand should never move back. Eg: If you punch with your left, your right hand would instinctively pull back, creating a twist effect. This is a no-no. The right should always stay in place protecting the chin.

I didnt realized the importance of it….. till today…..

Damn it, my OS project is due in like 8 hours time . And I’ve not even started on it. Just sent an email 5 mins ago to the Prof requesting (Read:Begging) him to extend the date line. And I’ve got a test tml. EE2011. Screwed.

[Update] 5 hrs left.. still no news from the prof…

[Update]

Hi Prof,

 I’m just wondering, isit possible to extend the lab3 date line by a day or so? Because the past week+this week has been the mid term test week and was kind of hectic. Thus i’m having a bit of problem completing it.

 I know this might seemed like an unreasonable request. But i figured no harm trying ya. Probably a better alternative then copying from my frens right?
 Thanks
Lab 3 submissions will be extended by one day. Some students have
midterms but in general you should really finish your labs earlier.
However since this period we have midterms, some small extensions are fine.

R

Whoo hoo….1 day only..so kiam siup…. but better the nothing

Been Some time since i last updated, thought I’ll just take some time out of my schedual to blog something. I just suddenly had this idea of blogging about things that are an absolutely must have in my daily life. Well since there’s probably a million must have in my life, I’ve decided to narrow them down to my top 5 Must Must Have List. Here it goes :

5.)Peter Pan Honey Roasted Peanut Butter (Creamy Smooth)

hfst171.jpg

If the only peanut butter you have ever heard of goes by the name of Skippy or Smuckers, its time to wake up to a whole new world. Peter Pan’s World. All the others are just butter with peanuts. Imitations. This is the real deal. Its what Peanut Butters should be. Once you start you cant stop. And you wont want to stop. I used to hate peanut butter. Especially Skippy. Because if you spread it too thin, you get no kick out of it. And if you spread it too thick, it gets irritably dry down your throat and it just kind of sticks to the rooft of your mouth after a while. Not Peter Pan. And it must be Peter Pan Honey Roasted Peanut Butter. In fact I wake up in the middle of the night craving for it. It’s not too dry, it smooth & its sweet. Real sweet. The way I like it. The sweeter the better. Just like girls.

There’s a similar product out there b Skippy. Guess what’s it called? Skippy Honey Roasted Peanut Butter. And if you’ve tried it and think it’s good, your a dork. It aint even remotely close. Make yours a Peter Pan starting today.

And no I’m not working for the company that manufactures Peter Pan.

4.) New & Trendy -Black

08-02-07_2156.jpg

No, thats not some syrup you are looking at. Its a shampoo. It’s Black. And it contains coffee extract. New & Trendy. Never heard of the brand before? Neither have I. But man it’s good I tell you. Now you can really wake up to the smell of coffee. Any one remembers the Herbal Essence ads on tv years ago. The one whereby there’s this gal moaning in esatsy as she’s shampooing her hair. This shampoo will make you wanna do that too. The only thing keeping me from behaving like that is that I would look so silly. Imagine shampooing your hair, moaning to the tune of Kopi-O. Everyone should try this shampoo out. Now you can experience the thick & intense aroma of roasted premium American Arabica beans on your hair. Now add some milk & cocoa and you’ll get mocha.

And no, this is not an ad for Nescafe

3.)Peter Pan Honey Roasted Peanut Butter (Crunchy)

hfst200.jpg

Read Item # 5. Now imagine all that goodness stuffed with crunchy peanuts. All within a can. Heavenly I would say

Did I mention that this is the best thing invented since peanut butter?

2.) & 1.) I’ll leave these for another day. Didnt know blogging takes up so much time.

I survived day 3…. barely….

My legs hurt.

My arms hurt.

My back hurts.

Everything is hurting is mad.Did I mention that the boxing gym, the majority of the people there were muds & nehs. Heck there are some ang mos, japs and nigerians there…I’m like 1 of the 3 chineses there….. But the muds and nehs are real friendly & nice .. There’s this godzilla size mud today with his gf… while we were running the routine 3 click, his gf suddenly complained that she’s tired at about the 2+km mark. This mud godzilla just picked her up and carried her. and RAN… i was like… holy shit… look at that godzilla in action.. what’s he going to do next.. breath fire? OMG i dont wanna face him in the ring….

Digg!

Just had my 1st boxing training last nite.. the boxing gym was just 10min walk away from kallang mrt. Was expecting a confined indoor area with poor ventilation whereby people not only need to avoid blows but also to avoid suffocating to death. Rather it was a open training grounds much like the size of a basketball court but with punching bags and stuff around the perimeter.And was I surprised at the amount of muds and ang mos there… Chinese were a minority! But the class wasnt too big anyway.. about 20 people are so.

The training is to be held 5 times a week. omg. I’m just taking this up as a sports not as a pro boxing career…Who the hell though up of the training schedual.

Anyway My first day of training consist of a 3km run, skipping (lots and lots of it) ,circuit training & shadow boxing. The shadow boxing routine was something like just standing with legs shoulder length apart, swing a punch, twist yor body and your knees. Sounds easy huh? Try doing that after all those skippping and run. The killer was the circuit training. By the end of it both my legs were cramping… Best thing is the front and the back of my legs are cramping. So when i try to stretch the back, the front cramps. When i streatch the front, the back cramps. For 5 mins I just lie down on the floor paralyzed. The thought of how important warmup was just dawned painfully on me. It has been years since I exercised till my body cramped. Surprisingly its quite a nice feeling knowing that you have exerted your max. The sense of accomplishment is just …. shiok? (and painful) Ironically its my legs that are hurting rather then the arms.

After the whole session, i was practically limping my entire journey back to the mrt station. Wonder how am i going to complete the run for todays session……

I’m damn proud of myself. 3rd week into the semester and I’ve started to do my 1st tutorial. Woah! So proud that I decided to make a scan of it;)

In case you are wondering, why is there a German sausage there: My Lecturer,Tutor & his wife are all Germans & I was kind of hungry at that time..

=)

Wonder how long I can keep it up.

Digg!

Recently I’ve managed to get my hands on a couple of obsolete, post dinosaur era (barely) PCs (Refer to post: PC Repair).  Well, they are doing a pretty good job collecting dust but I’ve decided that they probably can do a better job then that.  So I’ve taken the best of the lot & installed Ubuntu on it. Just for the record, it’s specs are:

  • Pentium 4 2.0Ghz
  • G-Force 2 MX 64mb
  • 256mb Ram

Not too bad isn’t it? Installation was standard without much hiccups.

Now back to the focus of the post. I’m sure many people , like me, would like to run both Linux & Windows applications. There are many ways I could have gone about doing it:

  1. Install Windows & Linux on 2 different system.
  2. Dual booting.
  3. Use virtualization technology
  4. Use Wine on Linux
  5. Use Cygwin on windows.

Install Windows & Linux on 2 different system.
This one is a no brainer. You can have 2 separate system with the different OS installed on them.The pro is there is no performance hit at all. The problem with this is that my 2 PCs are kind of far apart(5m) and I’m kind of lazy to get my fat ass off my leather chair every time i wanna switch OS.

Dual booting
Many people would have gone for this option. It allows you to choose your OS during boot time. It works but it does have a down side to it. You can run both Windows and Linux concurrently. At boot time, you choose either Windows or Linux. Imagine while working on Linux & you suddenly wanna run a Windows only application. How does having to stop your work, shutdown Linux, restart & boot into windows sound to you? Troublesome I would tell you. Then again there wont be any performance hit.

Use virtualization technology
Solutions like VirtuaPC or VMware allows you to have one operating system acting as a host and provided a PC emulation that you can install another OS on. For example, you can run Windows XP, install VM Server and create a virtual server with Linux installed. This is very convenient as it allows you to run Windows XP normally and yet have a window on your desktop that diplay the Linux environment. The downside to this is that it usually takes a performance hit. Imagine running 2 OS at the same time on 1 PC. Resources will be shared. Try opening photoshop in Windows & gimp in Linux and you will find your Pentium 4@2.0ghz becoming Pentium 4@TurtleSpeed.

 Use Wine on Linux
From the developer’s website : “Think of Wine as a compatibility layer for running Windows programs. Wine does not require Microsoft Windows, as it is a completely free alternative implementation of the Windows API….” Now this is pretty cool. Actually I was amazed at the results when I ran wine a couple of years back. WinMx actually worked perfectly back then running on wine. While Wine does a really good job and allows you to run lots of windows programs on Linux, but there are softwares out there that just refuses to run perfectly on wine. So this isn’t really an option for me.

Use Cygwin on windows
From the developer’s website:Cygwin is a Linux-like environment for Windows. It consists of two parts: A DLL (cygwin1.dll) which acts as a Linux API emulation layer providing substantial Linux API functionality.A collection of tools which provide Linux look and feel.” Its similar to Wine in the sense that it allows you to run Linux programs on Windows (Often recompilation is necessary). And as usual nothing is perfect and sometimes stuff are just incompatible.

Now I’ve covered several common options above but none of them are really what I’m looking for. What I’m looking for is to run both Linux & Windows at the same time on the same desktop without rebooting. Without leaving my comfortable chair. Without taking a performance hit. Theres a solution for this & thats to install the 2 OS on 2 different system and run a VNC Server on one and  VNC client on another. This would be a pretty good solution. It allows me to be in the environment that I am currently on and yet stream & control whatever is on the other system desktop.  Problem solved. Now wait a min, theres just a slight problem with this. Lets say I’m on System A and I’m running VNC server on System B. While I’m controlling System B from system A, I’m basically hogging both System A & B at the same time. My sis cant sit in front of System B and use it at the same time (Cause I’m controlling it via VNC).

Thus what I’m looking for is to run both Linux & Windows at the same time on the same desktop without rebooting. Without leaving my comfortable chair. Without taking a performance hit. Without imparing the ability of the another user to use the 2nd PC.

Thus what I did was to install Windows XP on System A (The one i use regularly). Install Ubuntu on System B. Run a X server on System A windows XP. Whenever I need to run a Linux program, I just ssh into System B and start it. The GUI would just connect and stream to System A’s X server. All these while, someone could be physically sitting right in front of System B without any interference. Dual OS. No rebooting. No performance hit. No Hogging of both system. No need to get my fat ass off the chair.

Below are the exact steps on how to get my current setup.

  1. Install Windows XP on System A. Just a standard installation would do.
  2. Install Ubuntu on System B. Again just do a standard installation.
  3. Install SSH on Ubuntu by typing into the terminal:
    sudo apt-get install ssh
  4. Install a X server on windows. There are quite a few out there: Xming, Cygwin/X ,AceaXe  ,X-Win32 etc. I found Cygwin/X to be working the best as its pretty lightweight. Xming came in 2nd with its ability to integrate the SSH interface direct into its interface. I never managed to get X-Win32 to work.
  5. Start the X server on System A.
  6. Download Putty the ssh client for windows. Run putty on System A. Do a normal SSH connection to System B. But under the SSH>X11 option, tick the box “Enable X11 forwarding” and type in System A IP address.
  7. Once You ssh-ed in, just go ahead an try starting a GUI program. xclock or something. You should be in Windows XP environment with a window that display your Linux apps.

[Update]:  Its more convenient to just start a full desktop environment. This can be done via typing into ssh gnome-session , startkde or xfce4-session , depending on which you prefer. Here’s a screenshot.

 kdewindows.JPG

So there you have it. Dual OS. No rebooting. No performance hit. No Hogging of both system. No need to get my fat ass off the chair. =)

Recently I've been reading this C# book: Beginning Visual C# 2005 Express Edition. Although this book claims that is suitable for beginners who have never programmed before, I am highly skeptical. True, the book is easy reading. Not too much words, lots of picture illustrations. But it tend to skip over important concepts/pitfalls that beginners should look out for. Eg: There was only a very very brief mention on Array starting with 0. The chapters on objects were rather weak too. People who have no background infomation on OOP is going to find it rather hard to follow. Thus I strongly do not recommand this book for any beginners. BUT if you've some programming background especially c/c++ this book really brings you up to speed. It's able to teach you all the necessary stuff to get you going in to time.

Anyway I've always believed that the best way to learn programming is not just through coding.  But rather through coding real life applications. Many programming books tend to teach the programming language by having small exercises where you type a small snipplet of code. Sure they may be useful in helping to teach the language, but I doubt it is enough. Such examples usually are very algorithm/syntax focused. Instead I've always felt that when trying to learn a programming lanauge, one should also try to code a real life application concurrently.  When I say a real life application, I dont mean some meaningless stuff that spew out "hello world", but rather applications that you yourself (and hopefully others) would want to use. It did not start out to be an extremely complication piece of software, it could be something as simple as a notepad replacement, or something more challenging like an mp3 player.

By working on such an application,

  • It forces you to not only focus on the code, but also on the UI
  • You will learn to optimize your code for a production environment. (esp if you compare why is ur mp3 player taking 5min longer then winamp to startup)
  • You need to take note of your documentation especially if you want to get others to use your software.
  • You will find that your programming book doesnt contain the info you need, thus forcing you to discover other resources you might not have know. It opens a whole new world.
  • You are likely to use/learn skills from other disciplain. Eg to photoshop that cool looking icon

So I've decided that in order for me to complete my learning phrase of C#, I'm going to start working on a software. What software I've still not decided, but I do have some ideas and they are ranked below in accordance to their difficuly level:

  1. Time Capsule Software-A simple application that allows you to store an encrypted message/file only to be retrived at a particular time in the future. Not something that everyone will want to use, but it will probably fulfill a niche area.Not a very complicated software to code.
  2. FTP client - Just a typical FTP client.Can be a simple application but can also be quite a bit of work to do if theres a need to support all the possible transfer mode(passive,active,server to server etc) + proxy etc.
  3. CD-Burner- How many of you are sick of Nero taking 3 mins to startup? This would be a simple lightweight CD-Burner that goes easy on system resources and hopefully portable so that you can just carry it around in your thumbdrive.
  4. Email Client- I've got some great ideas for a email client.  It will have a interface that is very different from all the current email client available (The so called outlook 2 or 3 split-panel interface). Got some great ideas to make a really nice interface that not only isit user friendly, but also makes it kind of fun to read your mail. But i think its pretty tough. Lots of RFC to read. The hardest part is probably how to display the email.

I'm pretty much inclined towards either the Time Capsule software or Email client as I've some fantastic ideas that are able to nake them standout of the crowd. Actually  the more I think about it, the better the Email Client sounds. But its really going to be tough coding it. Lots and lots and lots of research to do. Lots of inter-disciplinary skills to learn & stuff. Besides I still need to do a Java conversion course real soon.

Soon I'll write a post on what makes C# so great & what is it lacking(IMHO).

I've just stumbled across a pretty cool extension for Firefox. If you are one of those who likes XGL effects on linux, or Windows Flip 3D on Vista, then this pretty impressive plugin (with a pretty unimpressive name) is going to please you. May I present to you, the Firefox plugin:

Tab Effect

Now, before you get turned off by the name, let me just show you this:

It adds a 3d flipping effect whenever you switched tabs in Firefox.

Some reason why you will what to get it:

  • It looks very pretty.
  • It's going to impress your friends.
  • It isn't system resource intensive.(At least it doesn't lag me down on a 1.5Ghz laptop)
  • It actually makes switching tabs fun =)

Of course there are reasons why you might NOT want to install it:

  • It requires DirectX 8.
  • The flipping time is a tad too slow for me. (Read further below for a fix)
  • There are some minor usability issues, but nothing to major though.(Eg when you close the very last tab, it actually bring focus to the first tab instead of the previous one)
  • After the novelty runs dry, it actually gets pretty irritating.(When you switch tabs and the animation is running, you can't actually type. You have to wait for the animation to finish running. This gets a bit irritating for people like me who are used to having the tabs appearing instantaneously )
  • You might get a headach after a while. (I did)

At first I was pretty impressed with this (I still am), but after browsing the web for about half a day or so, I got it uninstalled from Firefox. While the flipping and stuff was really cool, I cant stand the slight waiting time(1 sec or so) before the new tab gets switched over. I use & switch tabs extensively (20+ tabs opened normally), and this is pretty irritating. Note that the plugin can be tweaked to change the switching time. Tweaked it too slowly: it gets irritating. Tweaked it too fast: You cant really see the effect & it gives me a headache.

To tweak the animation time:

  1. Locate the file javascript.js in the plugin folder.
  2. Open the file in notepad and find the line containing:  TabEffect.xpcomObj.translateToNextTab(back, 24);
  3. Change 24 to a value you desire.(0 is the fastest). In my opinion, 17 is the best as it allows you to appreciate the effect as well as not being too slow. Anything faster then this, I'll get a terrible headache.
  4. Save the file & Restart Firefox.

Despite not using this plugin in my daily usage, I still think that this is pretty cool stuff and I highly recommend you guys to give it a try.

Things I need to really get started on.And to do them fast:

  • Finish up the Visual C# book I'm reading now.(page 140/430)
  • Start working on drafting my Resume.
  • Reinstall Linux and master it throughly this time for my OS module
  • Start my C++ to Java conversion course REAL FAST for my software engineering course
